Smart control for safer roads: Development and testing of advanced Adaptive Cruise Control systems

Summary

Stop-and-go waves cause drivers to alternately slow down and speed up for no apparent reason. This is a complex phenomenon that affects road safety, journey times and the environment. Despite research carried out since the 1950s, it is still difficult to stabilise the flow of traffic. Recent experiments have shown that current adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems exhibit instability phenomena due to several factors.

This project aims to develop robust ACC systems that mitigate these problems by integrating advanced control strategies to handle latency and noise. The safety and stability of the systems will be tested using mathematical analyses, simulations, experiments with remote-controlled vehicles, virtual reality experiments and real-life scenarios, with a focus on safety-critical situations.
